Two methods, two questions
High-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry are often discussed together, but they provide different kinds of evidence. HPLC separates components in a sample. Mass spectrometry measures mass-to-charge signals that can support molecular identity.
What HPLC contributes
An HPLC chromatogram shows peaks produced as components move through a chromatographic system. Under the stated conditions, peak-area analysis can estimate chromatographic purity. Results depend on the method, detector, integration and sample preparation.
What mass spectrometry contributes
Mass spectrometry can compare observed signals with the expected molecular mass or ion pattern of a compound. It is valuable for identity assessment, but a matching mass signal alone does not describe every possible impurity. Used together, the methods provide a more complete analytical picture.
